Dr. Steve's Librarian - Frequently Asked Questions

About Dr. Steve’s Librarian

What is Dr. Steve’s Librarian?

Dr. Steve’s Librarian is an AI-powered educational tool built on the veterinary philosophy, protocols, and decades of case experience of Dr. Steve Marsden DVM. When you describe what’s going on with your pet, it shares what Dr. Steve has typically done in similar cases — the reasoning, the diet approach, the herbal support, and the next steps — so you can learn from his experience and make more informed decisions for your animal.

It’s educational. It won’t examine your pet or replace your vet. But for pet parents who want to understand the integrative approach and do right by their animals, it’s a genuinely useful resource to have on hand.

Who is Dr. Steve?

Dr. Steve Marsden is one of the most broadly trained integrative practitioners in North America — for both humans and animals. He’s a licensed veterinarian, acupuncturist (human and animal), naturopathic physician, board-certified Chinese herbalist and was one of the first people in North America to earn a Master of Science Degree in Oriental Medicine. He’s spent decades treating dogs and cats by finding and addressing the root cause of their conditions rather than just managing symptoms. The Librarian is built entirely on his thinking.

Who is this service for?

Pet owners who want more than a Google search or waiting for their post to be answered on the Ask Dr. Steve DVM Facebook page. If you have a dog or cat dealing with a chronic condition, and you’ve been looking for a thoughtful, integrative perspective on what might actually help — this was built for you.

The Librarian is designed for personal use by individual pet owners. It is not intended for commercial use, including veterinary practices, rescues, shelters, or other organizations. If you represent a group interested in using it, reach out to us at support@askdrstevedvm.com and we can walk through available options.

Is this a substitute for my vet?

No — and we’ll always be straightforward about that. Dr. Steve built this as an educational resource, not a clinical one. The Librarian doesn’t examine your pet, run tests, or diagnose anything. What it does is help you understand how Dr. Steve has typically approached similar cases — so you’re better informed and better equipped to advocate for your animal.

If your pet needs urgent care, please don’t stop here. Go straight to your vet or an emergency clinic. The Librarian is for learning, not emergencies.

What animals can I ask about?

Dogs and cats only. Dr. Steve’s protocols were developed specifically for canine and feline patients, so that’s where the Librarian can actually be useful. It won’t attempt to help with other species.

Is the Librarian available 24/7?

Yes. The Librarian is there whenever you need it. That said, if your pet is having a genuine emergency, please call your vet. The Librarian is for learning, not urgent care.

How It Works

How do I use the Librarian?

Just describe what’s going on with your pet in plain language — the symptoms, how long it’s been happening, what you’ve already tried, and any relevant history. The Librarian may ask a few questions before it responds, but it won’t pepper you with intake forms.

The more specific you are, the better. “My dog has been itching” is harder to work with than “my 6-year-old female Labrador has been scratching her belly and licking her paws for about three months — she’s on kibble and hasn’t had any diet changes.” Give it something to work with and it usually will.

What counts as a message?

Each time you send a message, that counts as 1 message. The Librarian’s responses do not count against your total. Your 5 free messages give you 5 complete back-and-forth exchanges to get a solid starting point.

How accurate is the Librarian?

In our testing, the Librarian’s responses came out on par with Dr. Steve himself — accurate roughly 90 to 95% of the time. The small gap tends to reflect the same kinds of things any knowledgeable person might occasionally miss: reading a question slightly differently, not surfacing the single best formula for a particular pattern, or leaving out a supporting therapy that would normally round out the plan.

That said — it’s AI, and hallucinations happen. Just like human error, there’s always a chance an answer is off. We spot-check by reviewing the hardest and most complex cases, but we can’t catch everything. Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, ask a follow-up, cross-reference it, or bring it to the Facebook group for a second opinion.

How is this different from Googling symptoms?

Google gives you the whole internet’s opinion. The Librarian gives you one — Dr. Steve’s — based on decades of actual clinical experience with integrative medicine. Instead of a list of possibilities, you get educational context on what Dr. Steve has typically seen in similar cases and how he’s approached them.

Can the Librarian see my pet’s bloodwork, photos, or lab results?

No. The Librarian can’t receive or analyze uploaded files of any kind. If you have lab results or test findings, just describe them in your message and it’ll work with that.

What if the Librarian doesn’t know the answer?

It’ll say so. If there aren’t enough matching cases in Dr. Steve’s knowledge base to give you a reliable answer, the Librarian will tell you clearly rather than guess. When that happens, the Ask Dr. Steve DVM Facebook group is the best next step — Dr. Steve and the community are active there. You may also be eligible for a refund in that case — see our Refund Policy for details.

Can I ask about more than one pet?

On a subscription plan, yes — you can store health history for up to 5 dogs or cats and ask about any of them. The Quick Check session covers one pet only and doesn’t save history.

What if I’m already mid-way through a plan with my pet?

That’s actually where the Librarian tends to be most useful. Subscription plans save your conversation history, so you can come back weeks later, share what’s changed, and it picks up right where you left off and adjusts the educational guidance accordingly.

Dr. Steve’s Approach

What is integrative veterinary medicine?

It’s the practice of combining conventional Western veterinary medicine with evidence-informed traditional approaches. Dr. Steve’s training is unusually broad — he’s a licensed veterinarian, animal chiropractor, acupuncturist (human and animals), naturopath, Chinese medicine practitioner, and master herbalist. That depth of training shapes how he approaches every case: not just “what’s the symptom and what suppresses it,” but “what’s the root cause, and how do we actually address it.” The Librarian reflects that same thinking.

Why does diet come up so much?

Because in Dr. Steve’s experience, it’s usually where chronic problems start. Processed, high-carbohydrate diets — most kibbles — tend to drive inflammation, disrupt the gut, and set the stage for the skin issues, digestive problems, and immune dysfunction that bring most people here. Diet tends to be step one because without addressing it, other steps often don’t stick.

How long before we see results?

It depends on the condition. Acute problems can shift quickly — sometimes within days. Chronic conditions, which have usually been building for months or years, tend to need 3 to 12 months of consistent support to see real change. Dr. Steve’s approach is built around actual healing rather than symptom management, which takes longer but tends to last. That’s also why the longer subscription plans exist — to support you through the full journey.

Will the Librarian suggest specific products?

Yes, where relevant. The Librarian draws on herbal formulas and supplements from Dr. Steve’s past advice — the ones he’s actually used in similar cases. It won’t suggest something just because it sounds plausible, and it’ll always explain the reasoning so you understand the why, not just the what.

Plans & Pricing

What’s the difference between the Quick Check session and a subscription?

The Quick Check session ($14.99) gives you 8 messages to use within 14 days for one pet. There’s no saved history and it’s a one-time purchase — ideal if you have a specific question and just want a focused answer without committing to a subscription.

Subscription plans ($23.99–$29.99/month depending on plan length) include unlimited conversations and save health history for up to 5 pets. Most chronic conditions need months of consistent attention, so the subscription plans are built around that reality.

Do I have to pay to try the Librarian?

No. Every new account gets 5 free messages to start — no credit card needed. Use them on a real question about your pet and see how the Librarian responds before deciding whether to subscribe.

Why do longer plans cost less per month?

Because healing takes time. The longer plans are priced to make it easier to stay the course through a full support cycle without having to think about it month to month.

Can I switch plans?

Yes. Changes take effect at the start of your next billing period — you’ll finish out your current plan first, then move to the new one. If you need to switch sooner, email support@askdrstevedvm.com and we’ll help.

Do unused messages roll over?

Free messages don’t roll over or convert to a paid plan. Once you subscribe, there’s no message limit anyway, so it won’t matter.

What happens to my pet’s history if I cancel?

It stays on file. If you resubscribe, everything will be there waiting. If you want it deleted, just email us and we’ll take care of it within 30 days.

Account & Billing

How do I cancel my subscription?

From your account settings — no phone call, no email, no hoops. You keep access until the end of your current billing period and nothing gets charged after that.

Will my subscription auto-renew?

Yes. All plans renew automatically at the then-current rate. We’ll send you a reminder 3 days before each renewal so you have time to make changes. If pricing ever changes, you’ll hear about it at least 30 days in advance.

What is your refund policy?

You have 3 days from your initial purchase to request a full refund, as long as you’ve sent fewer than 3 paid messages. Quick Check sessions are non-refundable, except if a technical failure on our end kept you from using it. If the Librarian genuinely couldn’t help with your situation because the knowledge base doesn’t cover it, that also qualifies for a refund within the 3-day window. Full details are at https://askdrstevedvm.com/refund-policy.

How is my payment handled?

All payments go through Stripe — we never see or store your card details. Stripe is one of the most trusted payment processors out there.

I can’t log in. What do I do?

Email support@askdrstevedvm.com with your name and the email you used to sign up. We’ll get you sorted within 72 hours.

Privacy & Your Pet’s Data

Is my pet’s information private?

Yes. Your conversations and your pet’s health history are stored to make the Librarian more useful to you over time — that’s it. We don’t sell or share your data with anyone, for any purpose. Full details are in our Terms and Conditions.

Can I delete my data?

Anytime. Email support@askdrstevedvm.com and we’ll remove everything within 30 days.

Getting More Help

How do I contact support?

Email support@askdrstevedvm.com. We respond within 72 hours on business days.

I have feedback or a suggestion. Where do I send it?

Please send it — we genuinely want it. Email support@askdrstevedvm.com or post in the Facebook group. The Librarian gets better because people tell us what’s not working, and that matters to us.
